HOOK POINT BEACH CLOSURE AND OLD MINING
ROAD UPGRADE........from Lin Powell
Many reports have been received about the rebuilding of the bypass road for Hook Point. Reports reaching my ears indicate that the road is not being realigned and
that the surface will be much the same as it was before the millions of dollars were spent.
That a bypass is necessary is the first question to be resolved. Only in the most adverse conditions is the beach at the southern end of the Island impassable. Of course if you try to travel the beach within two hours of high
tide you are merely asking for trouble. That of course gives the reason for the necessity for the bypass. Forget the high idealistic statements about nesting birds – I’ve never seen any nesting below high water – it’s all about
making the schedules of the commercial enterprises that are wrecking the tracks on the Island possible. It is noted from the EPA website that work supposedly commenced on 29 July and will proceed for 4 months and that the most
southerly 11 km would remain open with works taking place. The remainder is to be closed until finished. Wonder when that will be??Many people are angry at the waste of
public money on this project. A project that will aid but a few and adversely affect many. So, what’s new?
